British Values

Overview

As a Voluntary Aided Catholic Primary School, we promote Christian and British values through our curriculum, extra-curricular activities, teaching and learning. We ensure all learners understand the values that have traditionally underpinned British society, preparing pupils for life in England's increasingly diverse society.

We help all pupils become good citizens of the United Kingdom by promoting the values on which our society has been built.

Our Objectives

  • Develop understanding of values which underpin life in Britain
  • Teach mutual respect, tolerance and understanding of various faiths and beliefs
  • Ensure all learn to uphold the rule of law and support freedom, justice and equality
  • Help understand and value the diversity that citizens from different backgrounds bring to society
  • Value people's differences and respect them
  • Develop awareness and tolerance of communities different to their own
  • Value democracy and stand up for right against wrong
  • Care for the vulnerable and treat them as valued members of society
  • Ensure learners become good citizens of the United Kingdom

How We Achieve This

  • Promote British values through teaching across all curriculum subjects
  • Teach about parliamentary democracy and key institutions including constitutional monarchy
  • Develop understanding of democracy, universal suffrage and civic duty
  • Build skills for participation and responsible citizenship
  • Learn about democratic structures and promote civic pride through local government understanding
  • Emphasize the importance of good citizenship across the curriculum

Expected Outcomes

Through our work, pupils gain understanding of the values that underpin citizenship rights and responsibilities. We equip young people with knowledge, skills and understanding to contribute positively to local and national community harmony, developing responsible citizens who value community cohesion.

This approach contributes to our school's positive ethos and should be viewed alongside our Equality Statement, Equal Opportunities Policy and Behaviour Policy.
